Bare Bones

As if and in case anyone was wondering what happened to me, I have been lost in the studio plotting the sequel to my solo audio assault on your unsuspecting hearts and minds. 8 new greatbigsean tracks were hastily recorded in as many days last week in GBStudio for your listening pleasure (one digs when the dirt is darkest). No idea when or how these new masterpieces might be “released” and would love to hear some feedback from you in that regard. I will be road testing said work this week @ The Carleton in Halifax and The Black Sheep in Ottawa.

Tentative title “Bare Bones”

see you out there

  1. We wondered what you’d got to. Theories varied from ‘passed out on the studio floor’ to ‘lost in the woods’. Good to hear from you again!
I am raging! I won’t be able to hear the road-testing.
Very excited for you, in however way you decide to unleash the next solo magnificence, we’ll be listening! I personally like something to hug to my chest and show off to friendly people so I’d loooove a CD, you know with the artwork and the funny liner notes an’ all. Oh, or just do a nice long Radio Séan episode ofr our convenience.
    Sure you’ll figure something out.
    Keep livin’
    All the best
    J.

  2. Check out “Pledge Music” as a way to produce your new album. It’s fan-funded music with a social conscience.

  3. Road test first to gauge response and let the songs grow accordingly, then maybe sell individual already-recorded songs off your site as downloads, one at a time, over a period of months. One new song every month or two.

When you have the free time (yeah, I know not much of that once GBS gets on the go again), take what you’ve already recorded and go back into the studio to “unhastily” put Bare Bones into a final form…and then add a few new, totally unheard tunes to the eight you have now, say, four or so more. That gives you a full complement for a second album (8 is light for a CD, more like a really long EP – an EEP?), there will be polished versions of the tunes with which all your fans have already become familiar (maybe toss in a live version or two if you can work out recording issues – are Bruce’s SC’s recorded for broadcast and could you use that?), and there will also be brand new tunes to look forward to and give yet more reason for album’s purchase. .

It’s great to hear that you’re keeping on with your solo projects. I’m looking forward to the Halifax gigs.

  4. Nice to see you’ve been hard at work making more of the music we all can’t get enough of. The thought of more is a happy one indeed. Release away – we’ll snap it up however you choose to get it out there. I like holding a cd too. But if I have to make my own, that’s OK too. Check out Carbon Leaf. At a recent show they talked about leaving their label and releasing their material on their own. What a novel idea. However you do it, it will find its way into our heads and hearts … you’ve got a great knack for that. Keep on keeping on!
    Cheers

  5. really hoping you will get the chance to share your songs at other venues across canada, the us and beyond…waiting patiently

  6. I like Lynda’s suggestion: release one song at a time here on your site, and maybe also Twitter, Facebook, youtube. Then release the whole album in CD form for us to give each other at Hannukah/Christmas/Kwanzaa. Or release it now. Now is good!
    Peace.

  7. Glad to hear the words “new music”!

It’s all about the music! We’ll find it and scoop it up however you decide to proceed BUT, since you asked…

Perhaps, release the tracks individually over a few months(your site, iTunes, amazon mp3 cdbaby)…that way, it cuts down on the production costs to you. With a specific timeline, people know when to expect that new song and it generates sustained interest. Maybe have some tie in on this site when a new song is being rolled out.

BUT, for those who just love to hold that new cd in their hot little hands (me included) or enjoy reading your clever liner notes — you could provide on your site a downloadable jewelcase-ready set of liner notes and maybe a few photos of yours to choose from as cover art — again no copyright issues or costs to you. That way, we can make our own cd from the songs we paid for in digital downloadable form…

Any thought to streaming a bit of some of those future shows of yours? I’ve watched several artists stream their shows online via twitter using minimal equipment.

  8. Looking forward to Halifax and hoping the rumours about Jeen joining you are true–smokin’ hot harmony.

  9. I like Lynda’s ideas regarding trickling in the new songs via MP3 format (additionally prebuy “Bare Bones” and slowly trickle in downloads until the albums formal release?) Also like Shelia’s idea for live streaming of the concerts?

Wish I could make the shows this week, however there is just not enough time and too much space between my here and your there’s. Either way have fun with this journey, and much continued success in the adventure!

I don’t know the possability of “Fisherman’s Lament” showing up on the new CD. Not sure regarding the right issues on that song, and whether you would be able to/ would want to cover your father’s song.

Would love a bit of Collabaration between you and some of the other artists/conections in your life (Jon Janes, Chris Trapper, Ani Difranco? etc.) maybe a “Muscle and Tendon” album?

take care and again have fun with it.
    Michael!

  10. “Pledge Music” would be a great way to get your latest album out there. It’s fan-funded music with a social conscience. Fans pledge money, a portion of the proceeds goes to a charity chosen by you, and the rest pays for the album production. Pledgers get prizes for different levels of pledging. Anything from “free digital download of the album” to “free house concert at their house”. This is a way of letting fans get involved in the making of the music. They have a website, if your interested, but I think linking to it may have been why your net nanny rejected my last attempt to comment. wwwdotpledgemusicdotcom

  11. Hey Sean,

Sounds cool. However which way you decide to release the songs, you definitely have my support. I would buy whatever form is released – digital or hard copy. Looking forward to hearing the newer material!

Really nice to see you have an outlet for your non-GBS material, as it truly is some great stuff.

    Keep up the good work!
